Speeding
Speeding is perhaps the most common traffic infraction in New Jersey. While speeding tickets may seem at first glance to be insignificant, there maybe serious consequences to result from these tickets, including but not limited to the possibility of a license suspension. Loss of driving privileges can directly affect your employment and family obligations. As a result, if you have received a speeding ticket you should contact an experienced New Jersey speeding ticket attorney.
New Jersey speed limits are, generally, set as follows:
Speed Limit Roadway
Business, residential or school zones
35 Suburban, business or residential areas
50 All other roadways
55-66 Highways as posted
The penalties associated with speeding tickets are based on the rate of speed. For instance, a driver will received 2 points for exceeding the speed limit by 1-14 miles per hour over the limit, 4 points for exceeding the speed limit by 15-29 miles per hour over the limit and 5 points for exceeding the speed limit by 30 or more miles per hour over the speed limit.
Additionally, motorists are assessed double fines for speeding 10 miles per hour or more in a 65 mile per hour zone. Similarly, drivers face double fines in most other moving violations committed in a 65 mile per hour zone. Finally, drivers convicted of extremely excessive speeds (for instance, travelling over 100 miles per hour) will often face a mandatory license suspension and, in very limited case, jail.
